We Are One | Andrew Huang

I wrote “We Are One” a few years ago, at a time when my news feed seemed filled with tragic stories of suicides, shootings, bullying, racism, sexual assault… I hoped that I could say something to encourage anyone who had been hurt by someone else, to let people know that it is GOOD to be themselves, and celebrate both the diversity and oneness of humankind at the same time.

Lyrics:

it’s easy for me to say
from hills we’ve built on joy
but i’ll say it anyway
for those without a voice

it isn’t right, it isn’t good
we live at ease with things that shouldn’t be, woah
you only want to be set free
you couldn’t find a place to be at peace, no

but we are one
i want you to know it’s not always so hard
we are one, and beautiful
no matter who you are

the sun rises on your wounds
but they stay hidden away
and no matter what you do
you’ll dread each coming day

it isn’t right, it isn’t good
we live at ease with things that shouldn’t be, woah
you only want to be set free
you couldn’t find a place to be at peace, no

but we are one
i want you to know it’s not always so hard
we are one, and beautiful
no matter who you are
